Chris Johnstone
Managing Director
Chris began his career in the mid-1980s in the steel distribution industry, serving Structural Steel Fabricators. With over 30 years of extensive industry experience, he has held key roles at reputable companies such as Steelmark, Smorgon Steel, and Surdex Steel, where his positions encompassed Operations, Sales, and Branch Management.
In 2018, Chris took on the role of General Manager at AKZ Reinforcing, where he and his team successfully guided the company through a significant growth phase, expanding the staff from 30 to nearly 130 employees.
In 2024, Chris acquired AKZ Reinforcing Pty Ltd and assumed the role of Managing Director, thereby continuing the family-owned legacy that has thrived for more than 70 years.

Ian Ashmore
Sales Manager
Ian brings more than 30 years of experience in purchasing, product development, wholesale, and general management, during which he has effectively operated medium-sized businesses and launched four new ventures, including a joint venture in China.
Ian has five years of specialised knowledge in waterproofing, concrete remediation, and admixture, as well as over two years in the steel reinforcement industry.
Ian approaches every endeavour is centred around prioritising the customer’s needs.
David Evans
Finance & Accounts Manager
David is originally from the Latrobe Valley,beginning his career at the State Electricity Commission (SEC) in August 1981 within the Personnel Department. Since 1992, he has been engaged in the Finance sector and is approaching his 20-year anniversary with AKZ.
David’s interests include football, cricket, golf, and cycling, as well as spending time with his family, which includes his beloved pet, Dusty. Additionally, David takes pride in being recognised as a skilled quizmaster.
Michael Tran
Projects Manager – Scheduling Manager

With a robust career spanning over two decades in the construction industry, Michael Tran has cultivated a wealth of expertise that positions him as a leader in the field. For more than 15 years, he has held various management-level roles, where he has been instrumental in orchestrating complex projects and driving operational efficiency.
Michael’s extensive experience encompasses all facets of reinforcing and concrete within the construction sector. His technical knowledge, combined with his strategic insight, allows him to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget. He is well-versed in the latest scheduling software and methodologies, enabling him to adapt to the ever-evolving demands of the industry.
Michael Tran is dedicated to delivering exceptional results and is passionate about driving projects forward through effective scheduling and management practices.
